A Woman's Right to Choose
The sanctity of an individual's civil
rights have always been a founding principle of the Democratic Party.
Laws that encourage and increase abortion are
not protecting individuals rights, in fact, it disregards the
rights of a very important group of individuals, the unborn.
The fact is, when you take away religion, intensely deep-rooted feelings and leave
just the science, all you start out with is an egg and sperm. However,
once the egg is fertilized it becomes something completely new, which
is fully dependant upon the mother both inside and outside the womb
for at least the first few years. Unless something unanticipated
happens either inside or outside the womb, it will keep growing until
it is an independent human being and eventually dies. The only
difference is how it is classified along the way. So the unborn have to be classified as human and not just some
cells that become a human once it is born.
Some pro-choice advocates argue that it is not about killing
babies, but having a government legislate women's bodies and tear down 30 years of decided law. First, the law is obviously not settled.
The Supreme Court when making their decision (Roe vs. Wade), left huge holes of
uncertainty that have been argued over ever since the decision. On
that note, the Supreme Court
made sweeping changes to a law when the county was not ready for it, and
was not properly debated in an open forum. Even though
the preverbial pendulum was to far too the right, it has swung way to far too
the left. Secondly, the arugument of legislating women's
bodies is completely ridiculous. In that same argument you could
say the government does not have the right to protect you from harmful
prescription drugs being released onto the market without thorough
testing or dangerous chemicals being emptied into the environment.
The government can and does create laws that not only protect us from
each other, but from ourselves as well.
Liberal organizations like
NARAL (National
Abortion Rights Action League) admit they
will not compromise an inch and fully support any and all reasons
given to get abortions, whether 99% of Americans considered them
tantamount to murder or not. We also have leaders in the party that
support organizations like this and only preach oppression of the
rights of the woman to further abortion on demand and completely tear down any
discussion on actually defining if and when abortions are
necessary. What we need to remember is the Democratic Party
prides itself on having a big tent. The problem with supporting
organizations and representatives like this, is they do not share the
same big tent ideology of the Democratic Party and are counter
productive to our message.
Democrats for Values will work to redefine the Democratic Party
message on abortion to include the rights of the unborn and work
towards making
sure that these rights are not cancelled out by the rights of the mother
under any and all circumstances. We also understand that the rights of every
individual are important and will also make sure that rights of women
do not get completely disregarded like unborn babies did 30 years
ago.
In order to regain the upper hand on this issue, the Democratic Party
has to make a stand and draw a very clear line between what is right
and wrong. This decision to uphold the difference between an unborn
baby’s right to live and a mother's right to choose will not be an
easy one to swallow by all members of the party given 30 years of
propaganda. For the sake of the party's survival, a message that
values life is essential and steps need to be taken to shift our the
party in that direction.
Religion in our Society
The word Democrat has become a dirty word in some religious circles
due to the lack of influence God has on not only our members, but the decisions our leaders make on legislation. Why is it
that in
most rural communities that can obviously benefit from Democratic
policy much more than from Republican policy, overwhelmingly vote
Republican? Because of our perceived value system and the far
left stance that our party has adopted against religion in our
communities and our schools.
We have to change the way we look at laws. Secularism does
not mean void of values or morals, and the separation of Church and
State has been a huge nail in the coffin for the Democratic Party.
Common sense must be taken into account and the Democratic Party or
its members must not proactively take God out of society. It is
not only unpopular with the majority of our society, but it furthers
the decay of society in general.
Issues like abortion, prayer in school, and the Pledge of Allegiance
are prime
examples of where we have gone wrong and we need to take a 180 degree
turn and promote patriotism, not atheism.
The main reason we need to change our
ways is because we are alienating the majority of our Democratic
party, where faith is a major consideration. We are forcing our
constituents to choose between Republicans for their "perceived"
values/principles and Democrats for our economic/social policies.
The evidence of the effects of this could not be any more fresh in our minds, given the
results of the 2004 presidential election.
